Fast forward to present-time; this holiday no longer seems to stem from the need to protect one's soul from wandering evil spirits nor does it stress the donning of spooky or macabre outfits. Political heroes, Hollywood notables, and even princesses are making their way into the hearts and homes of people everywhere.
But Hollywood did indeed play a huge role in what began to appear on store shelves. Some people still feel as if the frightening and ghoulish outfits available today are the way to go on this one night of the year. Changing one's appearance in such a drastic way is a chance to be someone else, have fun, and let your hair down all at the same time.
It wasn't long before trick or treat became popular among children, and Halloween costumes were a necessity in order to mask their identity for this night of obtaining free goodies. The original idea came from the fact that people going around the town to be as destructive as possible in order to frighten off the spirits.
This holiday favorite is ranked in popularity as the number three best party of the year. In financial value, it ranks number two directly behind Christmas. With long-standing and fun traditions such as this, Halloween costumes will most likely be around for a very long time.
