Some Healthful Tricks for Your Treats - Healthy Halloween

| |

If you're on a diet during Halloween, good luck. There's almost no way you can resist eating fun-sized candies in front of the TV all month long. Not only is it terribly convenient to have six aisles at the grocery store dedicated to everything sweet, but Halloween can make you feel like a kid and nothing feels more "kid-ish" than throwing caution to the wind and stuffing your face full of candy. But beware, behind each sugary bite is a price to pay. Don't do yourself in just yet, there's still Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner.
Though these candies are miniaturized for trick-or-treating it doesn't mean they are completely harmless. Most miniature candies don't carry a nutrition label, so you won't be able to keep track of your calories. The best way to keep your diet on track is to do some research beforehand.
Candies to Stay Away From
These types of sweets are the worst, and coincidentally some of my favorites.
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
While other fun-sized options range between 20-50 calories apiece, each peanut butter cup is 88 calories and chockfull of fat, which of course makes it all the more delicious.
Almond Joy and Mounds
A serving size of these bars has more grams of saturated fat than mot burgers. It's not even worth it. Or is it?
Candy Corn
In my opinion, these quintessential Halloween candies are the absolute worst. My boyfriend however loves them. Next time he grabs a bag I'll just remind him that he's eating nothing but high fructose corn syrup with enough calories to set him back a few months.
Skittles
While the small packaging and bite-sized pieces make this candy seem harmless, beware of the possibility that you may eat more to compensate for the smaller portion. A regular sized package has 47 grams of sugar and 250 calories.
Treats to Eat
Peanut M&M's
Twenty of these add up to 220 calories, however they do offer a little nutritional value with 4 grams of protein. They also offer less saturated fat than other options. Eat with caution.
Three Musketeers
If chocolate is your pleasure, than go for these bars, in fact go for three of them. Three bars tally up to 190 calories plus they're low in fat!
Lollipops
These things can last awhile, which makes them all the more satisfying. Two lollipops are around 50 calories and contain zero fat.
Dark Chocolate
In comparison to other types of chocolate the dark variety is the most satisfying so you won't overdue it. In addition, dark chocolate is healthy for your heart and may help to lower blood pressure.
Sugar Free Candies
Most sugar free candies are low in calories but be warned that some of them are higher in fat than their sugary alternatives and carry with them more cholesterol.
Making mistakes this time of year is not the end of everything. Just remember, to pick up where you left off and keep going.
